Member News
To all members of the Island Country Club,
We are pleased to report exciting news regarding our golf course. When you come to play for the first time this season, you will notice that the expansion we have talked about for several years is well underway.
• the new fairways have been cleared of trees and stumps, making our new holes (which will eventually become half of a new number 5 and all of hole number 6, 7, and half of 8) clearly visible.
• a contractor has been identified who will do the finished grading, seeding of the fairways, building of the new greens and bunkers, installation of an irrigation system, and the planting of some new trees. This work will all be supervised by our architect, Ross Forbes of Forbes Golf Design LLC and by our superintendent, Kevin Piper.
• final construction will begin in April and construction involving the course we will play this summer will be completed by late June. This summer the new fairways and greens will “grow in” and will be ready for play during the summer of 2011.
• In addition, the sand traps on number 1 will be relocated, and the widening of number 9 fairway on the left hand side near the top of the hill will be completed.
Upon completion of this work, we will have a longer and more exciting golf course- one of the finest in the area. This will be a course our present members will be proud of and will also attract new members and increased daily fee play. And, because of the generosity of an anonymous donor, this work will be completed at no cost to the members of the club.
However, this exciting project will bring with it some inconveniences for play on the course this summer. They are as follows:
• The new hole number 5 construction will require the use of a temporary green on current hole number 3.
• A few other areas on the course will have to be played under conditions of “ground under repair” while the crews build new bunkers and tees on some of the existing holes. These areas should be growing in by early July and provide minimal inconvenience but will require some care on our part as players.
• Most construction workers will be off the course by early July, other than our ongoing maintenance crew.
A plan for the new course configuration is available for your viewing on our website, www.islandcountryclub.net.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience you will experience this summer, but we are convinced that the end result will be well worth it. One year from now we will be playing on an exciting new golf course.
