Extra Credit

Whether you remember your own experience in grade school, or that of your kids or grandkids, we all know how happy it made you to get extra credit on a test, a homework assignment or a special project. This week’s Newsletter begins with bestowing Extra Credit Awards for recent efforts that make clear why we are The Best Little Country Club in America.

Suzanne Banghart receives the Extra Credit Award for the many years she has decorated the periphery of the Clubhouse with the beautiful flowering hanging baskets she donates to the Club, making the porches and the entries to the Great Room and the Pro Shop special places. Extra Credit also goes to Member John “Too Tall” Thompson, who used his height to help Suzanne hang this year’s baskets.

Jon Hellstedt could receive extra credit for all the efforts he has made for the Club over the years but earns a new Extra Credit Award for being “Clerk of the Watch” overseeing the construction of the new fence on the east side of Court #1. The new fence matches the design of that on the west side of the court, and significantly improves the view of the course, woods and distant mountains from the Clubhouse and its patio. Our contractor used many excuses for why the work, which should have required only one day, was continually being delayed, but Jon stayed on top of them, and the new fence will finally be completed this week.

Keith Hoover and the Grounds Crew, who not only got the first phase of the tennis court re-surfacing done in record time and the lines and nets installed (see News of Tennis below) but made great progress fighting the weather and nurturing the golf greens back to good shape and getting the golf course prepared for yesterday’s first tournament of the year.

Thanks to each and all for doing “extra” for our Club. Who’s next?

News of the Clubhouse:
Fin & Fern lunches are doing well and are on sale every day (until we run out). The sandwiches have all received great reviews (especially the Roast Beef), the salads are fresh and flavorful, and the Whoopee Pies are a cardiologist’s nightmare – one can feed a family.

Our new, logoed combination marker/greens repair tool is something every player should carry. Annie has put it on offer at $5.00 and it’s invaluable to have one clipped to your bag or pocket. Annie has also created several golf accessory packages which you and your guests will like, also at very reasonable prices. The bottle cozies and wine glasses are also selling well – you may have to wait for a re-order if you don’t take advantage quickly because …

News of Golf:
The Trifecta once again provided an excellent start to the Club’s tournament season, with a strong assist from Mother Nature, who provided the warmest, sunniest and least windy day of the year. Fifteen twosomes took to the course for the challenge of playing in three different formats – Best Ball, Scrambles and Alternate Shot. Men played six holes in each format, women three holes in each. Tournament Director Ryan Hayward provided the results:

Important note: Points from this and every tournament at the Island Country Club add up in the ICC Cup competition for both Men and Ladies, leading to the ICC Cup tournament at the end of the season with $200 prizes for the winners. Details about the ICC Cup are posted on the Men’s and Ladies’ Bulletin Boards and the leaders will be posted in the newsletter after each tournament.

Scrambles on Friday, May 27 was competed by three teams. Winners were Jack Shaw, Bill Whitman, and Mimi Gerstell. They edged out each of the other teams by just one stroke! (We chose not to send one of our investigative reporters out to determine the actual score). Scrambles will be played again on Friday, June 3 at 9:00AM. Please sign up in the Clubhouse or call 348 2379 before 3:00PM on Thursday.
Twilight League Session 1 begins June 6. Commissioner Ken Wiberg is looking for one more twosome as well as golfers (yes, Ladies are welcome) willing to be called as substitutes. The format is a Modified Stableford with points for eagles, birdies and pars and penalty points added for double, triple and even more awful bogies. There are weekly and session long cash prizes. Email Ken at soxfankw@yahoo.com.

News of Tennis:
The tennis courts will be ready to play June 1 (weather dependent). After re-surfacing every Spring the courts must be rolled several times to make sure the surface fully adheres. Please remember to reserve your court and time by signing up in the Clubhouse or calling 348-2379. We hope to have news of Open Tennis, tennis tournaments and other tennis program activities soon.

News of Bridge:
Pat Roth and Jim Plotts plan to host Bridge again this year at our club. Jim reports that “We’re looking at June 20th for our opening night.” Look for more information in upcoming newsletters.

Editorial Note: It was great to have Bill Whitman back at the Club and on the course this week. It’s always a good week at the Island Country Club when you experience Bill’s smile.
Have a thoughtful Memorial Day.
